Capstone Reflection

Capstone Reflection

For the most part my Capstone booth/presentation was how I planned for it to be. In the end, after observing how people presented on Wednesday, I chose not to include a trifold poster. I bought one and was planning to construct it, but realized that it wouldn't exactly benefit my presentation and would be too cumbersome and take up too much space for something that wasn't necessarily needed. In the end, I thought it would take away from my presentation rather than add to it. I used my poster and website as well as had my paper in a black binder and a printed copy of my newsletter.

Overall, I felt like my Capstone project, in general, went fairly well. I don't think I stumbled too  much and I thought I knew my project topic and issue extremely well. However, my judge was hard to read and had a Ph.D in psychology so it may or may not have lived up to Capstone/her expectations. We had a long discussion and I thought I answered the majority of her questions well enough, though she did mention that she would include some feedback on how I could improve the project. I felt like it was a job well done, but I suppose we'll find out later just how accurate my feelings were.

Website

Here is the link to my finished website, though I still need to link my end product to it and finish some linkage problems. Otherwise, it is complete and published at http://brittdaniel72.wix.com/dispel-the-illusion.

PSA Intent

PSA Intent

How to write a PSA:
  • I think the hardest thing that occurs when writing a PSA is finding the balance between information and appealing to the watcher. PSAs are supposed to spurn and rally people to action, but generally speaking there has to be some type of information on it. If I can find that balance then maybe the PSA will work positively in my favor.

  • This PSA is called "We Are More Than Our Diagnosis" and it is a short video showing how people with mental disorders are no different than you or me. I liked how it showed a variety of age groups, though the majority were young adults and young children most likely to invoke an emotional response.

  •  I enjoyed this PSA, mainly cause it was obviously done by students, but it declared a message similar to the first. It was sort of goofy, but it's message was clear and concise as well as slightly emotional.
My PSA
  • The main intent of my PSA would be to make the public aware that what they hear about the insanity defense may not be the actual truth concerning the insanity defense.
  • Visuals might be of people, of TV shows and media posters, I might try and find some graphs to place in, and for audio...I'm not sure. I might find some music that's appropriate for the background or some speaking though the background sounds might work better.
  • I might use a more informative PSA rather than an emotional, though I hope to use a mixture of both. The two PSAs I watched were more emotional than informative and that worked well for their message. If I can find a way to display my message and intent in an emotional but action-provoking manner, then I may prefer that type of PSA to an informative one.
  • I think I'll define the insanity defense and use information before switching to an emotional manner. I know that I want to communicate to the viewers that the power is in their hands and they, therefore, need to understand the problem to effectively use their power and keep the justice system fair.

Presentation

Booth Presentation

  • I want to better my PSA (such as adding maybe a few more info or finding a way to make things more concise and less wordy) and use that as well as the website to showcase the research and newsletter/packet I construct.
  • If I can I want to print out a laminated copy of my newspaper (possibly a few copies) so that people can rifle through it.
  • I also think utilizing a tri-fold poster board with important stats and basic definitions (like what would be in the paper and on the newsletter/packet) and any visuals I can find that would benefit the project and presentation.
  • I think if I use a dramatic color scheme similar to my poster (which I may use as an attention grabber rather than an informing mechanism) such as red and black so that I create a sort of important, professional, or solemn mood to reflect the seriousness tone I took in my paper and of my project issue.
  • I'm still thinking and considering what would best present my project, but so far this is what I think will aid in my presentation the most.
